15 Home Maintenance Tips for Spring that will Save you Money

If you’re keen on taking care of a lot of tasks now that spring has finally arrived we’ve put together a list of things for you to do  that will not only help you to welcome spring but will also help you to save money during the rest of the year. So get out there and get these tasks done and then sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor with a nice cold one. Enjoy!

The first and best defense that your home has against inclement weather is your roof. It doesn’t matter if you have shingles, concrete tiles, or even a tin roof, now is the time to get out there and inspect your roof for any damage that might have happened during the winter so that you don’t have repair bills when the rainy season starts.

While you’re up on the roof cleaning and fixing the gutters is a great idea. If your roof is looking good but the gutters are clogged and leaky you could still have those same water damages and repair bills later.

Now is also the time to clean and or replace your HVAC filters. Frankly you should actually do this more than once a year because a dirty filter will cause your HVAC system to work harder and waste money. Also the blower motor could suffer damage if the filters are clogged.

You should be in the habit of cleaning your lint catcher every time you use the dryer. Now that it’s spring you will want to clean not only the lint catcher but the dryer vent as well. A plugged vent will waste money because your dryer will not function as efficiently and is also dangerous because it could cause a house fire.

Wall where on the subject of dryers why not take a look at the washing machine and make sure that the hose that connects it to the water and to the drain are both looking good. A cracked, leaky, or damaged hose can lead to a leak that you might not see until it causes a lot of damage.

Now is also the time to clean and repair any screens that you use in your windows.  The simple fact is, opening the windows and letting air into the house is much more economical than using the air conditioner and in many parts of the United States is sufficient to keep the family cool at least until the dog days of summer actually arrive.

Renting a pressure washer to clean your decks, fences, your driveway and even the side of the house is an excellent idea because it not only will keep the house the driveway and every other surface looking good but while you’re washing you will see any places where repairs need to be taking care of. While you are at it you should also fill in any cracks in the walks or driveways around the house so that the asphalt and concrete does not break down further.

Besides the roof the paint on your house is one of the most important protective services. Not only will a new paint job make your house look much nicer but it will also form a protective barrier that will keep rain snow sleet and other variant whether out. Of course if the paint is still looking good you might just want to go around and do some touch up especially in the areas where there are seals.

Here is a list of some other things that you can do if you still have the energy;

  • Vacuum your refrigerator coils.
  • Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors.
  • Prepare your lawnmower for summer use as well as other lawn tools.
  • Check all of the windows and doors are around your house to make sure that the seals are in good shape.
  • Clear the vegetation out from around the AC compressor.
  • Drain the water out of your water heater.
