Mining and Natural Resource Companies

October 25, 2012

Here’s an interesting piece of news; Nevada Copper Corp has recently decided to invest in 46 million common shares in Mercator Minerals Ltd. On top of the shares they already have that comprise 37.4% of the company, this means they now officially hold 43.1% of Mercator Minerals Ltd. And yet if you look at Mercator Minerals Ltd stock, they’ve hit a record low. They’ve more than halved in value from less than a year ago, and are a fifth of what they were in early 2011. This in turn is only a third of the point they were in in 2008, meaning their shares are now worth about one fifteenth of what they were at the companies height.…

Find Your Side Hustle

October 17, 2012

We personal finance bloggers like to talk about side hustles pretty often since many of us make money blogging at least part time.  I’ve been blogging for a couple years now, and what started as a simple hobby has turned into a side business for me.  I will always keep my day job since I enjoy it and it will inevitably bring in more money than blogging, but that doesn’t mean I can’t pad my saving account with a side gig in the meantime.  There are really two important aspects to finding the side hustle that works best for you; Make sure it is something you enjoy, and make sure it is something you are knowledgable in. …

  • Reading the paper, blogs, and magazines
  • Searching for places (restaurants, businesses…)
  • Mapping a route (I’m not the most directionally inclined person)
  • The basics (phone calls, texting, emails)
  • Playing games

If I forget my phone at home (it has been over 2 years since I did this last), I am lost. …

March 12, 2012

I have been seeing a lot of people posting about transferring debt to credit cards to get a better rate.   I even read articles telling students to transfer their school loans to a card.  Some say it is a good idea, and some say don’t do it.  What is the right answer?  Transferring debt to a credit card is a risky move, but it can be beneficial.  If you are thinking about transferring your debt, make sure you are aware of all the facts.

The Risks and Fees

If your mail is anything like mine, you receive about 2 credit card offers daily. …

The Risks of Joint Ownership

March 9, 2012

What if you went to the bank to withdraw funds, and the money was gone and the account was closed? First thoughts, someone hacked my debit card.  Second, did somebody hack into my account online? Third, did somebody steal my identity? You start to panic.  You sit down with a banker who starts researching what happened.  He says, ” John, the other owner on the account, closed the account yesterday.”  What!? How could he close the account without me? Isnt that illegal? The answer is NO.

I have helped quite a few people in this situation.  They had no clue that the person that they put on their account had this power.…
